MANFRED BISCHOFF: Helpless in Gold

MAEC: Museo dell’Accademia Etrusca
Piazza Signorelli, 9 – Cortona, Italy

August 19 – October 2, 2016
Opening August 19 at 6pm

Cortona’s inclination toward the arts is by now a well-known fact; in summer the Tuscan town hosts a whole series of events dedicated to cinema, theater, contemporary art and
design.

Within the sphere of these activities, Manfred Bischoff’s solo exhibition will open August 19, 2016, with the support of the Cortona Council for Culture, represented by Dr. Albano Ricci, and the City of Cortona. The show will be held in the spaces at the entrance of the MAEC, Museo dell’Accademia Etrusca di Cortona.

Manfred BischoffManfred Bischoff, German by birth, chose Tuscany as his adopted home, and Etruscan territory as his residence; he spent many years of his life in the hills of San Casciano dei Bagni, where he created numerous works, and his ashes lie in the little cemetery there.

Without doubt one of the great masters of contemporary jewelry, Bischoff used his keen imagination to transform sheets of gold into a theater full of characters that seem to have sprung from everyday life. But at the same time, his pieces of jewelry have something metaphysical about them, something Bischoff saw and loved in the Tuscan landscape. Little animals, music, art and nature were the founts of his inspiration, sources constantly fed by the irony that only great narrators can convey.

The exhibition at the MAEC, more an homage than a true anthological show, is the first one dedicated to this great master to be held in a public space in Italy, and brings together works from European and American collections.

For the occasion of this Manfred Bischoff solo show, a catalogue will be published with an introduction by historian and contemporary art critic Marco Bazzini, and a brief essay by Lorand Heghyi, director of the MAMC, Musèe d’Art Moderne et Contemporaine Saint Etienne Métropole, France.

In collaboration with Galleria Antonella Villanova, Florence and Collezione Calabresi, Rome.
