giotto’s angel: new tintype pendant

I’ve been collecting some old tintype photographs. No, they aren’t my family members, but they are beautiful objects of our past, and of someone’s beloved family. I like that the person photographed is mysterious, with an unknown narrative. If they were my family photographs, I wouldn’t have wanted to cut them up. Someone else has decided to sell them at a flea market, where I tend to find them. Lost family stories that could be similar to mine or to yours, but we will never know. Their potential is open to our imagination.

I decided to go with a sterling silver frame with an oxidized finish, connected with 18k gold rivets. The image is decorated with gold leaf and protected with varnish. The frame shape could be a modern medallion or a stylized family crest. This piece is vaguely Byzantine. I call it Giotto’s Angel. See more from my tintype collection and read about tintypes and daguerreotypes here. Look for more to come in the tintype series…
